The Book House, Dinkytown’s Independent Bookstore, Celebrates 40th Year and New Ownership
Minneapolis, Minnesota – August 4, 2015 – Long-time U of MN and Twin Cites community institution, The Book House, will celebrate its 40th year of continuous operation in Dinkytown. The anniversary will be commemorated with a week-long sales event (Aug. 14th-20th) featuring 20% off all books, refreshments, and a raffle in which participants can enter to win one of several unique goodies for book-lovers. Check the details at www.bookhouseindinkytown.com.
The cavernous charm of The Book House’s original location on 14th Ave SE was transplanted to its current location in the Dinkydale Mall (1316 4th St SE, 2nd Floor) just over 3 years ago. Despite losing its street-level storefront, the shop has continued to thrive and exemplify the enduring appeal of printed media. In 2014, The Book House partnered with the Espresso Royale Cafe to create “Books and Brew”, an additional book-selling venue with installations in their Dinkytown and Hennepin Ave locations.
In addition to the upcoming commemoration of the store’s longevity, The Book House is looking to its future. Kristen Eide-Tollefson, the store’s original owner, has arranged a transition of ownership to long-time managers Matt Hawbaker and Ryan Hinderaker.
“Not only has the Book House benefited from their competence and loyalty to our mission and community, but their energy and vision is vital to the future of both the Book House and the independent used bookstore. The industry needs a new generation of booksellers who know and are committed to sustain the unique and irreplaceable contribution of the printed word to our culture and lives. I am grateful to Matt and Ryan for making our move to Dinkydale such a success. And look forward to supporting them in implementing their business plan,” Eide-Tollefson said.
Eide-Tollefson will stay involved during the transition and oversee the store’s large collection of rare, out-of-print editions and titles, along with the handling of appraisals and personal library purchasing.
For Hawbaker and Hinderaker’s part, they say, “We’re both grateful and excited for this opportunity. It has been very encouraging to see the continued patronage of long-time customers, and the enthusiasm of people who have just discovered the shop. We also have purchased some fantastic collections in the last year or two that deserve to be recirculated among our community of scholars, collectors and book-lovers.”
The Book House will continue to stock a broad range of topics and genres, with a heavy focus on academic disciplines including philosophy, social sciences, psychology, religion, history, as well as a large selection of fiction, poetry and everything else you’d expect at a great used book store. Additionally, the store features a selection of vinyl records curated by local record dealer Chris Valenty.
Finally, Eide-Tollefson would like to say “Thanks to the thousands of customers, friends, and past Book House crew who have filled our aisles, and shelves, and hours. You have made the Book House what it is. Come celebrate with us at our Open House REUNION on the 21st!”
