Our Book House The Book House, located in historic Dinkytown, a few blocks from the East Bank campus of the University of Minnesota, is one of the longest continually operating used books stores in Minneapolis. Spread over two floors, we have over 150,000 titles in stock, with a selection of used books ranging from the general to the very academic and the very rare and collectible. Bob Dylan, who lived in Dinkytown for about a year back in 1959, described this eclectic community as 'the University of Dinkytown.' 4th Street, arguably the source for Dylan's iconic 'Positively 4th Street' and neighboring 14th Avenue Southeast are home to many interesting shops and bistros, some, like Al's Breakfast, familiar to generations of University students.
Opened in 1977, the Book House has a long history of acquiring rare and unusual collections from around the Twin Cities area. Over the years, we have provided a second home to private libraries such as former Governor Harold Stassen's, hard-to-find 19th and early 20th Century works in engineering, science and technology, an assortment of Marxist pamphlets, not to mention a whole range of first editions for titles that are only available now in reprints. The Book House has also traditionally specialized in the Social Sciences with broad Psychology, Anthropology and Sociology catalogs.
Customers returning to the Book House in Minneapolis will find that the store has recently undergone some remodeling and shuffling around to make the inventory easier to shop. But, what they will find has not changed is the Book House's commitment to remaining a vibrant 'bricks and mortar' bookstore while, at the same time, offering online customers a chance to find the same interesting, often obscure, occasionally quirky titles that have always made shopping the Book House a unique experience. With a deep stock in numerous subject areas, we like to emphasize the joy of discovery in searching through our shelves.
And our recently added computer kiosk allows customers to search through over 30,000 books in our inventory, thousands of which are available in our nearby warehouse.
The Book House is always interested in buying personal libraries and collections. Our mission as a used bookstore is to offer affordable copies of titles that are less and less frequently stocked by new bookstores, or have gone into expensive reprints. Please contact us if you are in the Minneapolis area and have books to sell. Recent new collections include a professor's sociology collection, which includes other substantial titles in philosophy, history, and Native American studies, and a retired engineer's large collection of European history and Christian theology. For more details visit our New Collections page.
Parts of our website are still under construction but, in the very near future, we will have links to new collections that come in, staff favorites, a visitor's page, news about upcoming events, and loads more. You can also look forward to a page devoted to the lighter side of the Book House.
We hope that you will decide to make our Book House your Book House, and come back to the site time and again, just as our loyal customers in the Twin Cities have made the shop on 14th Avenue a regular destination for more than 30 years.
